From May 21 to 23, 2024, EllerS Coffee participated in the International Coffee Santos Seminar, an essential opportunity for small meetings with the largest coffee exporters to discuss the current crop and analyze the challenges faced.
Crop Conditions
During the event, we found that this year's crop was significantly affected. The harvest is smaller, with the beans showing a size reduction of 10 to 20%, depending on the partner and the micro-region of production. The variation in flowering affected the quality of the coffee, resulting in beans of different sizes and minor defects. Green, black, withered, and dry beans are directly impacting the beverage's quality. The visit to the Port of Santos, organized by the Santos Coffee Association, revealed important insights about logistics and the impact of terminal congestion, highlighting the proportion of coffee in relation to other Brazilian commodities.
Market and Quality
We observed a significant increase in foreign visitors concerned about the Brazilian crop. International buyers took advantage of the fair to understand if there is indeed a coffee shortage and if producers are stockpiling the product. We noticed that large exporters withdrew sieve 17/18 coffee from the market due to fears of not being able to fulfill contracts, causing significant market variation with the New York Stock Exchange fluctuating. Highlights included lectures on new European export rules and anti-deforestation laws, as well as discussions on the need for more aggressive marketing of Brazilian coffee abroad, given that Brazil, despite being the largest exporter, is not widely recognized globally for its coffee.
Innovations and Trends
The event was an excellent platform for us to update ourselves on market trends, innovations, and current affairs. We were well received, with many companies interested in understanding our business with coffee and importers seeking insights into Brazilian coffee production and quality. The event's organization was impeccable, with the use of individual headphones for lecture transmission facilitating interaction and discussions inside the convention room. We left with a clear vision of how our company is perceived, it is present and active in the market, reinforcing our commitment to participating in high-standard events. Our next focus will be the World of Coffee Copenhagen, which will take place in June 27-29 in Denmark, where we hope to continue expanding our presence and connecting with international partners.
