COFFEE PRODUCING REGIONS

RIO DE JANEIRO

The state is a historic coffee producer, in the mid-nineteenth century coffee was one of the main maintainers of the economy of Rio de Janeiro, and the main generator of value for the development of the capital.
Currently, coffee growing is not so strong, where it has about 10,500 hectares of produced area (according to Conab data). Although it is one of the smallest production areas in the country, there is still a good concentration of coffee in the state, as in the Serrana region of Rio de Janeiro, which has milder temperatures and higher humidity, and also the Northwest Fluminense region with higher temperatures, with the cultivation concentrated in the higher areas.

From the 2000s, producers began to invest in gourmet coffees and fine drinks. In it, the Catuaí (Yellow and Red) and Mundo Novo varieties stand out. Some producers also bet on the Catucaí variety.

Located in the Vale do Paraíba Sul Fluminense, Vale do Café is the tourist denomination in the Southern Region of the State of Rio de Janeiro where coffee was the main source of income in the 19th century. At that time, the region produced 75% of the coffee consumed in the world, guaranteeing Brazil the world leadership in the production and export of coffee. After the interruption of coffee production by most rural properties in the early 20th century and the transformation of the region into an important Dairy Basin, the region became a Cultural Tourist Pole.
